Knoppel Prototype

Above is possibly the first Aphex finished product by Curt Knoppel in circa 1973 or 1974, likely an early variant of the 402. They may be the model Curt used to experiment with while he was in New York. It’s unknown where this unit resides today.

Curt Knoppel, the inventor of the Aphex Aural Exciter, supposedly had some type of prototype unit since 1973 which you could witness in person in his studio in New York City.  It’s unknown what the unit exactly looked like, but the photo of the unit listed on this page could have been it.

The above article is the first known regarding Aphex and Curt Knoppel.  February 1973.

The “New York” days before Knoppel hired out a marketing team (eventually would be Marvin Caesar).  Very rare advertisement.  Knoppel supposedly had some type of prototype unit that was a precursor to even the 402 Aural Exciter.
